Last year I did not make it to me one of the concert performances in the opera people to see, but thanks to the resumption I could see it yesterday. Those who want to see it still has on 2 March show the way to do this is after only one conclusion ... South Pacific In Concert in 2005 was listed in New York's Carnegie Hall - and what have been the need for a concert. The great Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush , Brian Stokes Mitchell as Emile and Alec Baldwin as Luther . A pleasure. On this version by David Ives also based Reisch Austrian premiere of the musical, which last year celebrated its January premiere at the Volksoper.
The idea the Rodgers & Hammerstein Musical bringing to Austria was a good one. Created it, according to editor Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz because of a Hoppalas at a gala, where he erroneously announced a song from South Pacific. The famous (to me but not known), opera bass Ferruccio Furlanetto but it was excited and told him of his dream to play once Emile de Becque. After he had refused the role on Broadway, to play in Vienna, the plan was perfect.
I must admit that I only from the ensemble alone Sandra Pires and Stephen Chaundry have known and the two were, unfortunately, pretty much the only ones I could yesterday get us excited ...
Sandra Pires Nellie embodied with charm and kindness. She has a beautiful, gentle voice and acting skills and also put on the day. Your playing partners Furlanetto but could convince only vocally. When he sang, I had to close our eyes to enjoy it, because I could not see him. No charisma, stiff performance. A little dull, he has read much text, and could feel when transported at all, only with his singing voice - unfortunately, the only rarely. Nevertheless, he creamed off the most applause at the end. Well ... The chemistry between Pires and Furlanetto tends to zero. Why Nellie could fall in love with this Emile, remains a mystery to me ...
Stephen Chaundry I did as Lt. Joseph Cable much better. Man, you realize that English is his native language and through this advantage, he could also provide a successful acting performance, vocally he was doing well.
Rodgers music is mostly very nice melodic, who does not know "Some Enchanted Evening" ? Bali Ha'i I always think about getting used to, although, if It is performing well, certainly has its qualities "Bloody Mary" Marjana Lipovsek has performed passably, she could in her role but also convincing -. but as opposed to Lillias White, the role in 2005 in the took over Carnegie Hall, it falls back but very. The chorus of people affected by the opera patch ease a bit embarrassing. The performance was okay, but not very lively, and far too stiff. The large orchestra of the Volksoper, however, left a very positive impression. to bring
South Pacific to Austria, but there is already a large Praise. Finally, a piece of musical history. The cast is - in my opinion - but something went next, despite supposedly great stars of the opera world. But there is already the error. Musical is not an opera - maybe sometimes a little operetta, but that can cope with it easily. Opera performers who do have great voices, but that it often lacks any acting skills are simply inappropriate here. Who wants to see and hear how it really works, the sounds, the best Broadway Revival Cast Recording or version of the Carnegie Hall (via Itunes erhältich) to - here The quality at home.
Conclusion: A great idea with great success, but classical miscast. But please do not let discourage people love opera. Please further attempts of this kind - they save the Musical in Austria! (A CD of the concert version of the popular Opera is already available - but rather I reach back to the above pictures.)
The Concert from Carnegie Hall is also available on DVD - I am setting the same time on my wish list! :)
